Good evening Munich! No, Charlie has nothing to do with a chocolate factory. Wait… Don’t leave just yet! Charlie may not offer any Wonka bars and you may not meet any Oompas Loompas in the kitchen, it is worth a visit anyway. Charlie is a trendy Vietnamese restaurant located in the Schyrenstr., on the outskirts of Untergiesing – no need to have a golden ticket to enjoy some Vietnamese goodness!***The location: Charlie is located in the Schyrenstraße , on the East side of the Isar. The closest Ubahn is the U1-U2 Kolombusplatz. The area, mostly residential, is nice and quiet.***The atmosphere: Munich hipsters make no mistakes about it – at Charlie’s, the atmosphere is resolutely trendy. The décor is quite on the minimalistic edge: mainly woody and with cool lamps, light tones and colors. We particularly liked the original outside-look of the restaurant, purple neon and old style sign like an old movies place.***The fffoood: The highlight of the menu is the “lau” which can be translated as hot pot (Feuertopf in German). Choose your soup (vegetables or meat) and your main ingredient from a variety of meats, fishes and veggies. Everything you get is raw and will be cooked –by yourself- in the soup. Once you’re done cooking, the skillful will have no issues rolling everything into a beautifully shaped roll, ready to be dipped and savored by its creator… YOU!Be aware that you need to be at least 2 persons to order this dish. If you’re not in the mood for a Cook-It-Yourself experience (or if you are alone ;-)), Charlie offers a couple of salads, soups, noodles and other daily dishes to choose from. The “Specials” are 3 compositions based off duck and king prawns. For starters, we recommend the fried rolls – we got the pork fried rolls and found them delicious.Price-wise, we find Charlie to be a tad expensive – For the hot pot, 15EUR per person plus main ingredient (ranges from 5EUR to 9EUR) and drinks, you can end up at around 30EUR per person if you stick to a couple of drinks and have a starter on top. The rest of the meals rarely go below 10EUR. Bonus points however for the big portions!***The verdict: The hot pot was a fun and tasty experience, the service was absolutely perfect: quick service, little waiting times and special tips from the waitress on how to roll up the rolls. On the other hand, we found the menu a bit limited and expected a bit more variety. If it’s true authenticity you are after, then Charlie might not be the place to go…And if you really are a chocolate fan, there are some Schokobömbchen with Mango pulp for dessert!
